Epigenetics and Cancer

Epigenetics refers to heritable modifications in gene activity that occur without a change in the DNA sequence. Epigenetic processes, such as DNA methylation and histone acetylation, modulate when and the level at which genes are expressed or repressed.4,5 Epigenetic processes affect gene regulation by changing the conformation of DNA.6 This can alter the ability of a gene to interact with transcription factors and can result in epigenetic silencing of genes, such as tumor suppressor genes. By repressing the transcription of tumor suppressor genes, cancer cells may be allowed to proliferate.6,7
